Breast augmentation risks range from normal surgery risks to augmentation specific horrors. If you are considering breast implants, do your homework about the risks and rewards of surgery. Depending on your reasons for wanting the procedure, the benefits may or may not outweigh the risks.
For most women who live their lives in bodies they are not satisfied with, the humiliation of small or deformed breasts is too much to live with if it can be helped. Maybe the women were teased growing up, or some other painful memory haunts them. No matter what the reason, the desire to correct their flaws is strong and unending. For these women, cosmetic surgery far outweighs the risks of surgery. If this scenario applies to you, think before acting. Before going under the knife, you should know the risks.
As with any surgery, there is a risk of complications from anesthesia, bleeding, infection, slow healing, and scaring. The risks of those complications happening with a breast augmentation surgery aren’t any higher than with any other type of surgery, so long as the surgeon is good, you have followed all the pre-op instructions and proper sterilization procedures are followed.
Breast Augmentation specific risks are many, though relatively rare. Capsular contracture, that is, hardening of the scar tissue surrounding the implant, is arguably the most common complication. Breast droop, deflation, displacement and rupture of the implant is also not unheard of. Wrinkling of the implant is more common, as well as more noticeable, in women with naturally sparse breast tissue.Skin irregularities, such as puckering, can occur with breast augmentation surgery. Desensitized breasts, nerve damage and complete nipple numbness have also been reported.
More serious risks include hematoma, which is pooling of clotted blood in the breasts. Seroma, another serious risk, is the pooling of watery blood around the implant. Though very rare, symmastia is another risk to consider. Symmastia happens when the implants move and merge into one mass.
The best way to avoid these complications is to find a good surgeon. For the best plastic surgery, Beverly Hills is the place to look. Make sure your surgeon has full credentials, a great history, mal-practice insurance, references and hospital privileges. Your surgeon should have a healthy respect for your wishes and be able to guide you in the right direction. He or she should also be able to answer any questions about the risks and benefits of breast augmentation.

Breast Augmentation: Which Type is Right for You?

Due to extreme advances in medicine, there are several types of breast augmentation available today. Reasons for breast augmentation are aesthetics, breast reconstruction after cancer or to correct deformations, breast reconstruction to replace dangerous, old implants, or as part of sex reassignment. Both men and women can have breast augmentation or reductions. Breast augmentation is the most common form of plastic surgery in the United States. With all the advancements in medicine and the popularity of this type of surgery soaring, many men and women are considering having this procedure performed. The question of what type of surgery would be best for you beg to be answered.
The two most common types of breast augmentation implants are saline and silicone gel. Other types of implants used in the past were polypropylene string and soy oil filled implants. It is sometimes recommended that these implants be replaced, due to safety issues.
While there isn’t much choice in type of implants offered, there are a wide variety of incision types. The most common is called an inframammary incision, which is to say an incision just below the breast in the infra-mammary fold. This procedure is most common due to the fact that placement of the implant is easiest and most precise using this method. Some women opt not to use this method though, as breasts that do not drape over the infra-mammary fold will show a more visible scar than with other methods.
The periareolar incision is one that places the incision along the areolar border. If using silicone gel implants, this type of surgery is more difficult that an inframammary incision due to the fact that the actual incision length is approximately five centimeters in length. The biggest advantage to this type of incision is that scaring after healing is minimal.
The transaxillary incision is an incision in the armpit, whereby the implant is tunneled into the breast for proper placement. With this type of incision there is no scaring on the breasts, but placement is much more difficult. Revisions of the surgery are sometimes required.
Transumbilical incisions are much more uncommon. This technique requires the surgeon to incise the navel and tunnel up from the stomach into the breast. There is no scaring of the breast, but the surgery is much more difficult and recovery takes longer and is more painful. Only saline filled implants may be used with this procedure, as silicone implant’s shells can be damaged during placement of the implant.

For the growing number of women whom have elected to have breast augmentation surgery done, many wish they would have been given certain common sense tips about what to do and what not to do post-op and how to prepare themselves and their homes for recovery. Breast augmentation is a painful cosmetic surgery. While preparing for surgery there are certain steps you should take that most doctors do not think to tell their patients.

To best learn how you will feel post-op, walk through your home with your arms duct taped to your sides. This is about the range of motion you will poses after to surgery. If there is something you can not reach, such as dishes, pots and pans, your phone, etc., you will need to rearrange. All necessary items will need to be placed within this comfort zone for at least two weeks after surgery.

Pain medications prescribed after surgery will make you feel nauseous. Light, dry foods can help combat this, as well as prescription medications your doctor may give you. It is a good idea to go grocery shopping and get at least two weeks worth of supplies. Buy light foods, such as crackers, soups, apple sauce and fruits. Foods that require little or no preparation and are nutritious are highly recommended.

Cook a few meals ahead of time. If you are prone to heartburn stay away from tomato based dishes. Soft foods and foods that will not require cutting are best. Good examples of pre-cooked meals that can be frozen and reheated easily are chili, spaghetti, vegetable soup, stew, runzas, etc.

Clean your house top to bottom. Do all your laundry, change your sheets on your bed and set up a bed on your couch. Get any vacuuming and dusting out of the way now, as you will not feel like doing it for at least two weeks post-op. Make sure to have new bottles of shampoo and conditioner in your shower, as squeezing out of old bottles will be painful for a while.

Find all your loose fitting, comfortable, soft clothing and set it out. You will not want to search for these things after surgery. Button up shirts are recommended. Pullover sweaters are basically a bad idea, as you will stretch your range of motion beyond what is comfortable or wise. Buy several bras that are unpadded and are the appropriate cup size for after your breast augmentation.

Breast augmentation recovery, while painful, can be made easier by following these common sense tips. If you have questions or concerns, you may contact Dr. Calvert’s office or schedule a consultation by visiting http://www.drcalvert.com/.
